Tenderloin National Forest is a small outdoor art space tucked between buildings at 501 Ellis Street in San Francisco’s Tenderloin. Murals, trees, herbs and flowers share the alley with mosaic paths and koi ponds, giving you a quiet change of scene amid the surrounding streets. A red iron gate marks the entrance, but access can be uncertain because the space may be locked. Visit in daylight, and look out for events such as free jazz concerts and exhibitions.

How the alley became a garden

The space was created in a previously rundown Tenderloin alley. In 1989, the Luggage Store Gallery, an artist-led nonprofit, negotiated a lease with the city and began transforming it.

The project brought trees, herbs and flowers into the alley. Murals cover its concrete walls, while mosaic paths and koi ponds changed the look of the former paved space.
