Fort Funston is a coastal park on San Francisco’s southwestern edge, with sandy bluffs, Pacific views and trails above a broad beach. Dogs can roam off leash, and the cliffs are a popular launch point for hang gliders. Stick to the bluff paths for an easier walk, or take a steep route down to the sand for a longer shoreline stroll. The beach is exposed to wind and strong currents, so enjoy the surf from shore rather than swimming. Former military batteries add traces of the site’s past.

Bluff trails and ocean views

Fort Funston sits on San Francisco’s southwestern coast, within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The park’s sandy bluffs rise above the Pacific and are threaded with walking and hiking trails. The open, windswept setting feels different from the city’s more built-up areas, with ocean views from the clifftops and dunes and coastal plants along the paths.

You can keep your visit on the upper trails for a shorter outing. Paved paths, including the Sunset Trail, provide a relatively easy way to enjoy the coastline without taking on the descent to the beach. Battery Davis, a former military installation, is one place to pause along the bluff; benches there offer a spot to take in the view. Parts of the site also retain concrete remnants of its defensive past.

The bluffs are exposed to coastal wind, so bring a layer if you plan to linger. Hang gliders launch from the cliffs when conditions are suitable. They are a distinctive sight overhead, particularly during the months when activity is most frequent, March through October.

Getting down to the beach

Reaching the sand takes more effort than walking the upper paths. The descent is steep, and routes include stairs and a sand ladder. Expect the return climb to be demanding, especially after walking on the beach. If you want an easier visit, stay on the bluff trails rather than treating the beach as a quick detour.

Once down, you can walk along the shoreline, but tides affect how much beach is passable. Some sections can be cut off at high tide. The surf and currents can also be dangerous, so keep to the shore and do not treat the water as a safe place to swim. Check the conditions before committing to a long walk along the sand.

The beach is a quieter-feeling coastal stretch below the cliffs, with views back up to the bluffs. Its exposed position brings strong wind at times; consider choosing another outing if the forecast calls for heavy winds.

Dogs and the former fort

Fort Funston is known for its off-leash dog trails and beach. Keep your dog within sight and under voice control, and pay attention to any area-specific signs or wildlife alerts. Dogs can drink from spigots in the parking lot, but there is no place to wash your hands, so pack hand sanitizer.

The site began as a coastal defense installation in the early 1900s. Today, the old batteries and concrete structures sit among the trails and dunes. They offer a glimpse of the park’s military history alongside its present-day uses: walking, beachcombing, dog exercise and hang gliding.

The upper paths are more accessible than the route to the beach. The descent is not suitable for mobility devices, and the sandy, steep terrain can be challenging. If accessibility is a concern, check current park information before you go and plan to remain on the upper trails.
