Samuel and Elizabeth Willing Powel acquired the house in 1765, shortly before their marriage. Samuel served as Philadelphia’s mayor before and after the American Revolution. The couple hosted lavish dinners and gatherings here, welcoming guests that included George and Martha Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and the Marquis de Lafayette.

Elizabeth Powel was a confidante of George Washington. Her letters urged him to seek a second term, adding a personal dimension to the house’s connection with the early republic.
