At 532 N 7th St in Philadelphia, the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site preserves the only surviving home he lived in during his years in the city. The three-story brick house is mostly unfurnished, with exhibits about Poe’s life and writing. Look for the cellar associated with “The Black Cat,” then explore the rooms and garden at your own pace. It is a compact, worthwhile stop for Poe readers and historic-house fans; if you want a furnished period interior, this is not the place for that.

Edgar Allan Poe lived in several Philadelphia houses during his years in the city, from 1837 to 1844. This is the only one that remains. The small brick house dates to 1842 and is preserved as a National Historic Site at 532 N 7th St.

Poe’s Philadelphia years were productive. Works associated with this period include “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Black Cat” and “The Murders in the Rue Morgue.” The exhibits connect his time in the city with his writing and career.

What to see inside

The house has three floors and is largely unfurnished. Rather than a recreated mid-19th-century interior, you’ll find exhibits and information about Poe. The bare rooms leave the focus on the building and the writer’s work.

The cellar is a particular point of interest because of its resemblance to the basement in “The Black Cat.” Outside, the garden and artwork provide more to explore. The visit can be self-guided, and a short film about Poe may be available on request. Ask staff during your visit.
