Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens opened in 1893 as a gift to the City of Pittsburgh from Henry W. Phipps. Its Victorian glasshouse sits in Schenley Park, near the Carnegie Museums in Oakland. The historic building now contains 14 display rooms, with plants arranged in settings that evoke different climates and garden styles.

The rooms have distinct characters. The Orchid Room centers on orchids and flower displays, while the Desert Room presents plants adapted to dry conditions. In the Tropical Forest Conservatory, visitors can walk among plants from humid climates. The Palm Court is near the entrance, and other rooms include a Japanese Courtyard and formal French and Flemish garden designs.

Seasonal displays and outdoor gardens

The conservatory combines permanent collections with rotating, themed exhibits and seasonal flower shows. The displays change through the year, so a return visit can bring a different arrangement of flowers and plants. Spring and summer bring changing blooms outdoors, while the Christmas season is known for its lights and holiday displays.

Beyond the glasshouse, the gardens extend across a 15-acre site with 23 distinct gardens. Take time to explore each area: the outdoor spaces include ponds and fountains, while indoor exhibits may pair plants with artwork. The full visit can take longer if you pause to read exhibit information or spend time with individual plants.

Sustainability at Phipps

Phipps connects its plant collections with work on sustainable design. The Center for Sustainable Landscapes, which opened in 2012, is one of three sustainability-focused buildings on the campus, alongside the Nature Lab and Exhibit Staging Center. The Center for Sustainable Landscapes received five major green-building certifications: Living Building Challenge, LEED Platinum, WELL Platinum, SITES Platinum and BREEAM Outstanding in Use.

The site is designed for self-guided visits, and exhibits include information to read as you move through the rooms. Workshops and educational programs are also part of Phipps’s activities. A small café is located on the ground floor near the gift shop.
