Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden opened in 1938 in Coral Gables. It was established by Robert H. Montgomery, a businessman and plant collector, and named for his friend, plant explorer David Fairchild. The garden’s focus is exploring, explaining and conserving tropical plants.

The grounds cover 83 acres and bring together palms, cycads, flowering trees, vines and other tropical specimens. The collections include rare plants, and the garden’s work extends beyond display to plant research, conservation and education. Its programs include the Million Orchid Project and the Fairchild Challenge, which connects learning with environmental awareness.

The garden is large enough to reward a slow walk. Trails lead through distinct areas, including the rainforest, a sunken garden and themed plant displays. The Richard H. Simons Rainforest is one of the garden’s named exhibits; other collections include palms and cycads. A vine pergola stretches for 700 feet, and a conservatory houses rare specimens.

The butterfly garden gives visitors a closer look at butterflies in a garden setting. Children can spend time in the immersive Children’s Garden, while plant enthusiasts can look for flowering trees and tropical fruit trees among the collections. The grounds also have shaded spots and scenic overlooks for a pause between walks.

Planning a visit

You can explore independently on foot or join a narrated tram tour that travels through the garden. The tram is a useful way to see more of the grounds without walking the full route, and volunteer-led tours provide additional context. Arrive early if the tram is part of your plan, since tickets are worth securing at the start of your visit.

A weekday visit can leave more room to explore both the lush garden sections and the more open areas. Families have the Children’s Garden and plant-focused activities to add to the walk. A café and restrooms are on site. If you bring a picnic, note that there are shaded areas but no designated picnic tables. Workshops and special events, including concerts, also take place at the garden; check its website for current details.
