A gateway in Merrick’s plan

Coral Gables - Alhambra Entrance

George Merrick envisioned a series of gates marking entry to Coral Gables. Inspired by medieval European gates, they were intended to distinguish the planned city from the surrounding area. The Alhambra Entrance is one of these gateways, built from native stone with benches beside it.

The design belongs to Denman Fink, Merrick’s uncle. An artist and magazine illustrator, Fink also designed the Venetian Pool and the Alhambra Water Tower, and served as Coral Gables’ artistic adviser. Because he was not a licensed architect, Phineas Paist and Walter De Garmo provided the final architectural sign-off.
