The Blues Hall of Fame began in 1980 as an honor for people whose performances, recordings and writing made a lasting contribution to blues. Inductees are recognized in five categories: performers, individuals, classic blues literature, classic recordings as songs, and classic recordings as albums.

For decades, the Hall of Fame was a way to recognize artists, not a place visitors could walk through. The museum opened in May 2015, giving those stories a permanent home in Memphis. Its collection brings together musicians and other contributors, including people who documented the music and helped carry it forward.

Ten galleries use interactive touchscreen displays to introduce the inductees and their work. Three master databases add music, video and written accounts, so you can follow an artist through more than a name and date. Take time to browse the recordings as well as the displays; the listening rooms provide access to catalogs of blues artists.

The collection includes instruments, tour clothing, album covers and other memorabilia. Among the named objects are Charlie Musselwhite’s harmonica, a jacket worn by Muddy Waters and a dress associated with Koko Taylor. These pieces give the history a material detail, alongside the biographies and recordings.

What the collection covers

The museum’s scope reaches beyond performers. Its five categories include individuals, albums, singles and literature, as well as artists known for performing. That range helps explain how blues history is recorded and remembered, not only how it sounds.

The Blues Foundation continues to induct members into the Hall of Fame. The museum presents those honorees through exhibits and digital resources, with material spanning music, video and stories. Visitors can also find mixed-media art by Kelvin Baldwin on display, with some work available to buy.
