Original Muscle Beach is an outdoor gym on Ocean Front Walk, just south of the Santa Monica Pier. Established in the 1930s, it became a training ground for acrobats, gymnasts, wrestlers and stunt performers, then a gathering place for bodybuilders including Jack LaLanne. Today, you can use the ropes, rings, parallel bars and balance bars, or watch athletes practise their skills beside the ocean. It is distinct from Muscle Beach in Venice, which took on the name after Santa Monica’s original facility closed.
A training ground by the pier

Original Muscle Beach began in the 1930s, south of Santa Monica Pier. The Works Progress Administration built an outdoor gym on the sand, and the site drew acrobats and stunt performers who practised routines for films. Gymnasts and wrestlers also trained here. People gathered to watch, giving the beach a social life alongside its role as a place to exercise.
By the 1950s, the beachfront setting and nearby Hollywood had helped make it a recognised workout spot. Bodybuilders Jack LaLanne, Vic Tanny and Armand Tanny were among those who trained here. The area became associated with a wider fitness boom, as well as with gymnastics and strength displays.
The original and the Venice site

Santa Monica’s Muscle Beach is often confused with the better-known facility in Venice. They are separate places. After the Santa Monica facility closed in the late 1950s, bodybuilders moved south to Venice, where a city-run workout area later inherited the Muscle Beach name.
The Santa Monica site remains just south of the pier. Its history includes an earlier gymnastics platform and weightlifting shed, which were removed when maintaining them became difficult. Today’s outdoor gym is a more modest way to connect with the place’s history: equipment remains available for exercise, with the beach and ocean beside it.
What to see and use
The equipment includes rings, parallel bars, balance bars and ropes. You can work out or watch other people practise. Weekend visits may bring gymnasts to the bars and rings, while weekdays are a useful choice if you prefer to avoid the busier crowds.
The site suits families as well as people who come to train. Children can watch the acrobatics, and the nearby Santa Monica Pier makes it easy to add another stop. Bring water if you plan to exercise outdoors, and check for scheduled events or bodybuilding shows if you want to catch a performance.
