Just behind Wynn and Encore, Guardian Angel Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral and a quiet stop just off the Las Vegas Strip. Architect Paul Revere Williams designed its angular A-frame building, marked by a cross-topped spire and an entrance mosaic. Inside, look for Isabel Piczek’s geometric stained-glass Stations of the Cross and the vivid mural behind the altar, titled “The Final Beginning.” The cathedral opened in 1963 after priests had begun celebrating early Masses in hotels and casinos for people working overnight shifts.

A cathedral built for Las Vegas

Guardian Angel Cathedral stands just north of Wynn and Encore, close to the Las Vegas Strip but apart from its resort buildings. Its design came from Paul Revere Williams, an influential mid-century modern architect. The sharply angled A-frame gives the building a different profile from traditional European-style churches, while a white cross and spire mark its exterior.

The cathedral grew from a practical need in a city shaped by overnight work. In 1958, Clerics of St. Viator began holding early Masses in Las Vegas hotels and casinos. A permanent church opened at the present site in 1963. The connection between the cathedral and the city’s hotel and casino workers remains part of its history.

Mosaics, stained glass and the altar mural

A large mosaic by Los Angeles artist Edith Piczek sits above the main entrance. The image includes a guardian angel guiding figures associated with prayer, peace and penance. Nearby, a statue of the Holy Family stands beneath the cross-topped spire.

Inside, stained-glass panels designed by Isabel Piczek follow the building’s geometric lines. They depict the Stations of the Cross, giving the familiar sequence a modern visual treatment. The mural behind the altar, titled “The Final Beginning,” provides a vivid focal point. These works are among the details to look for during a visit; take time to notice how the art fits the cathedral’s angular architecture.

Attending Mass

The cathedral welcomes local worshippers and visitors, and services follow a traditional Roman Catholic format. A choir sings at some Masses. The interior’s acoustics can create an echo, so spoken words may be harder to follow from some seats.

Check the current service schedule before setting out, particularly if you are planning around a vigil or Sunday Mass. Arriving early gives you time to find the entrance and a seat. The cathedral has free parking, and ride-share is another way to reach it from the Strip. If you attend a service, treat the building as a place of worship and allow others space to pray.
