Confluence Park is a riverside green space in downtown Denver, where Cherry Creek joins the South Platte River. Paths follow the water past grassy picnic areas, a small sandy bank and a short whitewater course where kayakers and tubers take on the rapids. You can walk or cycle the trails, pause by the river or watch the city skyline from the pedestrian bridges. The park is also a convenient outdoor stop near the Downtown Aquarium, Elitch Gardens and the REI flagship store.

Where Denver began

Confluence Park

Confluence Park sits in Lower Downtown at the meeting point of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River. The junction gives the park its name and its shape: paths and open spaces follow the water, with the city close around them.

The site is tied to Denver’s beginnings. In 1858, prospectors came to the area in search of gold, and a camp here grew into the city. Today, the river junction remains central to the park, but its role is recreational: people come to walk, cycle, picnic and spend time by the water.

Trails, bridges and river views

Walking and cycling routes run along the riverbanks and link the park with Denver’s broader trail system. The Cherry Creek Trail starts here, and the park is also part of the route network along the South Platte. Pedestrian bridges provide elevated views over the water and the surrounding city.

The compact park has grassy areas, benches and a small sandy bank. Its position makes it easy to add a walk here to a visit to nearby places such as the Downtown Aquarium or Elitch Gardens. The REI flagship store is also close by.

Whitewater and summer events

A short, constructed whitewater course draws kayakers and tubers to the South Platte. You can watch from the riverbank if you would rather stay dry. Cherry Creek and the South Platte also have shallow areas where families spend time in the water during summer, though conditions can include a strong undertow. Keep children supervised near the river.

In summer, the park hosts free concerts on Thursday evenings until dusk. Weekends can be busier, so a weekday visit may suit you if you want a quieter walk. The park is open from early morning until late evening, but daytime is the practical choice for exploring its paths and riverside areas.
