Stackpole Quay

Stackpole Quay is a small historic harbour on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, tucked beneath cliffs near Pembroke.

Stackpole Quay is a small historic harbour on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, tucked beneath cliffs near Pembroke. Built in Georgian times, it now makes a handy starting point for coastal walks and sea-kayaking trips. Follow the clifftop path towards Barafundle Bay, or pause at the harbour café for a hot drink and a snack. At high tide, the sloping access is better suited to launching water-based activities; the amount of beach changes with the tide.

A harbour built for the estate

Stackpole Quay was built in Georgian times by the Cawdor family, who owned the surrounding estate. The harbour formed part of a large landscaping project that also included a new mansion at Stackpole Court, lakes created by damming rivers and the landscaped shore at Broad Haven South.

The wider project changed the landscape around the coast and inland waterways. Ornate bridges crossed the lakes, while a man-made estuary led towards the beach and the Bosherston Lily Ponds. The quay’s original purpose was connected to nearby limestone quarries; today, its sheltered position makes it a launch point for coastal activities.

The Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs from the quay through cliff scenery towards Barafundle Bay. The route continues past Stackpole Head and other coastal points before turning inland near Broad Haven South; another section loops around the Bosherston Lily Ponds. Tide times matter along the coast, including at Barafundle Bay, which is reached by a walk through pine trees and dunes and has no facilities on the beach.

The harbour’s gentle slope is used to launch kayaks and paddleboards. Guided sea-kayak trips from Stackpole Quay travel along the coast towards Barafundle Bay, with equipment provided. Pre-booking is advised for these trips, though it is not essential. The surrounding limestone cliffs also show geological formations and structures.
