Prior Park

Prior Park Landscape Garden is an 18th-century National Trust garden on the hillside above Bath.

Prior Park Landscape Garden is an 18th-century National Trust garden on the hillside above Bath. Its paths wind through woodland, open lawns and lakes, with views across the city and the Palladian Bridge as the main landmark. The bridge is one of only four of its design in the world. Walk the sloping route for changing views of the garden, or pause by the lake before continuing through the grounds. The paths are well maintained, but some sections are steep. The mansion is now a school and is not open to the public.

Prior Park

Prior Park was created by local entrepreneur Ralph Allen in the 18th century. The garden was laid out with advice from the poet Alexander Pope and landscape gardener Lancelot “Capability” Brown. It occupies a steep valley above Bath, where the paths, woods, lawns and lakes make use of the hillside and open views.

The garden formed part of Allen’s estate. Its mansion, Prior Park, is now a school and is not open to the public. You can see the building from the grounds, but the visit is centred on the landscape garden rather than the house.

The Palladian Bridge and lakes

The Palladian Bridge is the garden’s defining landmark. It crosses the lake and is one of only four bridges of this design in the world. From the paths, you can see the bridge against the water and the valley; its reflection is especially visible in the lake. The grounds also include other lakes, woodland paths and garden structures.

The walk takes you through a mix of carefully laid-out scenery and more natural areas. Depending on your route, you may pass open parkland, wooded sections and quiet places to pause. The garden’s paths follow the valley’s slopes, so expect some uphill and downhill walking even though the main route is well maintained.

Planning a walk through the grounds

A circular, horseshoe-shaped route takes in the garden and the Palladian Bridge. Allow around 30 minutes for a short walk, with extra time if you want to stop at viewpoints or explore more of the paths. The garden is close to Bath, and the No. 2 bus can take you up the hill to the entrance. Walking from the city means an uphill approach, while nearby parking is limited.

The café is a useful stop for hot drinks, scones with clotted cream and jam, and other refreshments. Check the closing time before setting out if you plan to eat there. On sunny days, much of the garden is exposed, so bring water and sun protection. Comfortable shoes help on the sloping paths.
