Havenstreet Station is the main stop on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, a heritage line running through island countryside between Smallbrook Junction and Wootton. A ride in a restored Victorian or Edwardian carriage is the centrepiece, and an all-day ticket lets you travel more than once. Allow time to explore the railway’s history displays and workshops at Havenstreet, too. Families can add the children’s play area and free craft activities, while the on-site cafe provides a place to pause between trains.

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway follows part of the former Ryde and Newport line, which opened in 1875. Today, the preserved route runs between Smallbrook Junction and Wootton through about five miles of countryside. Havenstreet is its main station, with much of the railway’s visitor facilities gathered here.

A train journey takes you through rural stations and open island scenery in restored Victorian and Edwardian carriages. The full return trip is about an hour, and all-day tickets allow repeat rides. You can also get off at stations along the route, giving you the option to explore beyond Havenstreet before catching another train.

Displays and railway workshops

The Train Story Discovery Centre traces the history of railways on the island. Its exhibits include historic railway objects, while displays explain how the line and its trains were restored and preserved. It gives context to the journey, whether you arrive with a particular interest in railway history or simply want to understand what you are seeing from the carriage.

The Carriage and Wagon Workshop is another stop to add to your visit. You can see the work involved in restoring and maintaining railway carriages. The station area also includes a railway shop and a museum with historic signs and number plates. Together, these places make it possible to spend time at Havenstreet between train rides.

A family visit to Havenstreet

Children can take part in craft activities and dress up in the museum. There is also a play area, with a playground and a cafe nearby, so families have options once they have finished looking around the exhibits. Special events, including an Easter trail, add activities on selected dates; check the railway’s website for current event details.

Free on-site parking is available, and the station has wheelchair-accessible parking, an entrance, seating and a restroom. Buying tickets in advance is recommended. If you plan several journeys, check the timetable before your visit so you can organise time for the train, displays and workshops.
