The Amyntas Rock Tombs sit in a cliff above the southern edge of Fethiye, a short walk from the old town of Paspatur. The tombs were cut into the rock in the 4th century BC for Lycian rulers and high-ranking people. The largest one has a temple-style facade carved straight into the stone. The climb is short but steep, and the top gives a wide view over Fethiye and its bay. A visit takes about 45 to 60 minutes.
Who was buried here

The tombs belong to the Lycian civilization, which buried its dead high on cliffs. The tombs are believed to have been made for local rulers or people of high rank.
The main tomb takes its name from an inscription in the ancient alphabet, cut about halfway down the left vertical strip. It names Amyntas, son of Hermapias. Please do not add your own name to the walls, as the carvings are old and fragile.
The tomb with the temple facade

The main tomb has a facade in the Ionic style, with a landing flanked by pillars on both sides. Four steps lead up to it.
On the eastern slope below it is a second group of rock tombs. Two of them also have temple facades.
The interior of the main tomb is empty. Some of the tombs without steps can be entered, and their chambers are also bare. Several visitors have said that the chambers are small, so the carving on the outside is the main attraction.
The climb and the view
The route to the main tomb is steep. By one count it has around 200 steps, and the rock can be slippery. The tombs on the lower path are reached more easily.
At the top, the view covers the town of Fethiye, its harbour and the bay. At prayer times, the call from the town's mosques can be heard from the rock, which gives the visit a calm, local feel.
Planning the visit
Early in the morning the site is usually quiet, and the light is softer for photos. Late in the day, when the sun drops toward the sea, the stone and the water catch the light well. Midday is bright and hot, so it is harder to take photos and harder to climb comfortably.
