Nawarat Bridge crosses the Ping River in Chiang Mai, linking the eastern side of the city with Tha Phae Road and the old city. Walk across for river air, views of daily life and flower displays along the bridge. Visit after 6 pm for an evening walk, or time your trip for a festival if you want to see the bridge at its liveliest. Festival crowds can be very heavy.

A crossing over the Ping River

Nawarat Bridge
Nawarat Bridge

Nawarat Bridge carries traffic across the Ping River and connects routes from the east with the city. Tha Phae Road leads from the bridge towards Chiang Mai’s old city, so the crossing is part of an everyday route as well as a place to walk.

Take time to walk alongside the bridge, where flower displays add colour through the year. Riverside seating nearby gives you a place to pause, and convenience stores in the area can provide refreshments.

Festivals around the bridge

Nawarat Bridge

Nawarat Bridge becomes a focal point during major celebrations in Chiang Mai. At Loy Krathong, activity gathers along the Ping River, where floating krathongs are part of the festival. The bridge can become extremely crowded, with fireworks and lanterns adding to the activity, so plan for a hectic visit rather than a quiet riverside walk.

The flower float parade also passes over the bridge on its way towards the old city and Tha Phae Road. Festival schedules and routes can change from year to year. Check locally for current details before setting out.
