Wat Pathum Wanaram Rachaworawihan

Wat Pathum Wanaram Rachaworawihan is a royal Buddhist temple on Rama I Road, between Siam Paragon and CentralWorld in Bangkok.

Wat Pathum Wanaram Rachaworawihan is a royal Buddhist temple on Rama I Road, between Siam Paragon and CentralWorld in Bangkok. Founded by King Mongkut in 1857, it gives you a quiet place to pause amid the city’s busy shopping district. Walk through the temple halls to see murals and traditional details, then spend time in the shaded garden, where a lotus pond and pavilion add to the calm. The grounds are also used for meditation and Buddhist ceremonies.

A royal temple among the malls

King Mongkut founded Wat Pathum Wanaram in 1857, when rice fields and canals still surrounded this part of Bangkok. The temple was built beside Sa Pathum Palace, his residence, and served as a royal place of worship. It was dedicated in honour of Queen Thepsirintra. The temple was officially consecrated in 1867.

The name Pathum refers to the lotus, while Wanaram means forest temple. Its setting has changed considerably: today, the temple stands on Rama I Road between Siam Paragon and CentralWorld, in the commercial area around Siam and Ratchaprasong. The quiet grounds create a marked pause from the surrounding streets.

Temple halls and garden grounds

The main ordination hall, or ubosot, follows traditional Thai temple design, with a tiered roof and chofah finials. Inside the temple halls, look for murals depicting the life of the Buddha, along with lacquered sculptures and ornate decorative work. Signs around the compound describe the lives and achievements of Buddhist monks honoured at the temple.

The garden known as Sala Phra Ratcha Sattha is shaded by large trees. A lotus pond and open pavilion are among the features of the grounds, while the rear area includes monks’ quarters. A pavilion reconstructed from the crematorium of the late Princess Mother is also part of the site.

Prayer and ceremonies

The temple remains a place of worship, and local people come to pray. Keep your voice low and give devotees space. The grounds are also used for meditation, mindfulness practice and Dhamma listening.

Chanting events begin at 7 PM. Registration is recommended in advance, with early afternoon given as a useful time to sign up. A donation of 60 baht per person is encouraged during registration. White clothing is advised for ceremonies. The temple has also hosted a candlelight procession, or Wian Tian, in which participants walk with a candle, incense and flowers.
