Sanam Luang is a broad public field beside the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok’s historic Phra Nakhon district. It gives you room to walk or pause between visits to the nearby landmarks, with views across the grounds towards the palace and temples. The field has a long connection to royal ceremonies, including cremations, and still hosts cultural events such as the Royal Ploughing Ceremony and kite-flying festivals. Go in the late afternoon, when the cooler air makes a walk across the open space more comfortable.

A royal field in Bangkok’s historic centre

Sanam Luang lies in Phra Nakhon, between the Grand Palace and the former Front Palace. The open ground was laid out as part of the royal complex when Bangkok became the capital in 1782, following a plan connected to the old northern capital of Ayutthaya.

The field was once known as Thung Phra Men, or the royal cremation ground. Royal cremations were held here from the reign of King Rama I. In 1855, King Rama IV changed its name to Thong Sanam Luang, later shortened in common use to Sanam Luang. The Fine Arts Department lists the site as historic.

Ceremonies and a place to pause

Royal ceremonies have shaped the field’s history, and official gatherings still take place here. Events named in connection with Sanam Luang include the Royal Ploughing Ceremony, kite-flying festivals and celebrations for the King’s birthday. The grounds have also hosted special public displays and commemorations.

On an ordinary visit, the open field is a place to walk, rest or watch daily life near some of Bangkok’s major sights. The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew are close by, and the National Museum is among the nearby cultural stops. Because the space is exposed, a late-afternoon visit is more comfortable than crossing it in strong midday heat.
