Maokong Gondola carries you from Taipei Zoo station into the tea-growing hills of southern Taipei, with views of the city, forests and hillside temples along the way. The ride takes about 20 to 35 minutes each way. Choose a Crystal Cabin with a glass floor to see the slopes below, then explore Maokong’s tea houses, cafes and food stalls. A late-afternoon trip can bring sunset and city lights into view on the descent. Check conditions before setting out, as bad weather can stop service.

From Taipei Zoo to the tea hills

Maokong Gondola

The gondola begins beside Taipei Zoo station and climbs into the hills of southeastern Taipei. The route runs for more than 4 kilometres and has several stations between the zoo and Maokong. The ride takes about 20 to 35 minutes each way, depending on the account of the journey.

The system began operating in 2007. Before the gondola opened, Maokong was reached by road. The area was once a leading tea-growing district, and the ride gives you a view of the wooded slopes and tea plantations on the way up. Hillside temples and the Taipei skyline are also visible from the cabins.

Standard cabins and Crystal Cabins follow the same route. The Crystal Cabin has a glass floor, so you can look down at the landscape beneath you as the gondola moves uphill. It is an option for travelers who enjoy heights and want a different view of the ride. The cabins are not air-conditioned, so expect a warm ride on hot days.

At the upper end of the route, Maokong has tea houses, cafes and food stalls. Tea grown on the mountain is served at local tea houses, and the area also has tea farms to visit. You can make the ride a short outing or leave time to explore beyond the station before returning.
