Bopiliao Historical Block

Bopiliao Historical Block is a preserved street in Taipei’s Wanhua District, a short walk from Longshan Temple.

Bopiliao Historical Block is a preserved street in Taipei’s Wanhua District, a short walk from Longshan Temple. Its red-brick shophouses, arched verandas and wooden signboards give a view of the area’s Qing-era and Japanese colonial architecture. Indoor exhibits and information displays trace early Taiwanese urban life, and some activities are designed for children. The outdoor lanes are free to explore, with shaded and covered stretches that offer a quiet pause from nearby city streets. Check the exhibitions as you walk through the historic block.

A street shaped by trade

Bopiliao formed during the Qing period, when Wanhua was a port and commercial center. The name is connected to the stripping of cedar bark brought to the area by merchants from Fuzhou. Trade linked the settlement with communities nearby, and the district developed around its port, temples and market streets.

Bopiliao was once among Taipei’s busy commercial areas, with merchants and businesses along its streets. Its place in the city’s history can be read in the surviving street layout and buildings, rather than in a single monument. The preserved block gives a sense of how early urban life took shape in Wanhua.

Buildings from different periods

The street preserves brick shophouses and other buildings associated with the Qing period and Japanese colonial rule. Red brick, arched verandas and traditional wooden signboards are among the details to look for as you walk along the lanes. The architecture includes Taiwanese and Western influences, reflecting changes across the area’s history.

Bopiliao’s buildings were protected from further alteration after the site was designated for a school in 1941. That restriction helped preserve a section of the old street as Taipei changed around it. Today, the restored block functions as a cultural and educational area, with outdoor lanes as well as indoor spaces for exhibits.

Exhibits and a walk through Wanhua

Information displays introduce the history of the neighborhood and early Taiwanese urban life. Some exhibits include interactive elements for children, and art exhibitions are also held in the block. Take time to look inside as well as along the street: the displays add context to the buildings and the people who lived and worked here.

The lanes are close to Longshan Temple and fit into a walk around Wanhua. Shaded walkways and covered sections provide shelter from sun or rain, and public toilets are available on site. The outdoor area is free to enter. The site is closed on Mondays and open on other days, so check the current schedule before setting out.
