Dakeng Scenic Area is a network of forest hiking trails in the hills of Beitun District, on the northeast edge of Taichung, about 30 minutes by car from the city center. Routes run from short, gentle walks to steep climbs with wooden steps, and higher points look out over the city and the surrounding mountains. Butterflies and birds are common along the way. Trails 6 to 10 are the easier ones near the urban side, while Trails 1 to 5 go deeper into the hills and are harder. A small market with food, drinks and fresh produce sits at the trail entrances.

Where the trails sit

Dakeng Scenic Area

Dakeng Scenic Area lies in Beitun District, on the northeast edge of Taichung where the city meets steep hills. The name means a large pit or hollow. It refers to a narrow valley that runs uphill from the Taichung Basin into the hills. The valley floor is built up, and the hiking trails climb the forested slopes on either side.

The trailheads are at Lane 383, Section 1, Dongshan Road. By car it takes about 30 minutes from the city center. The trails nearest the city, numbered 6 to 10, are easier to reach by public transport.

Choosing a trail

The trails are numbered, and the number tells you a lot about the effort ahead. Trails 6 to 10 are closer to the city and flatter, so they suit beginners and families. Trails 1 to 5 lie deeper in the hills, with steeper sections and harder access. Trail 4 is described as the most demanding, with sharp ups and downs, and it is rewarded with a wide view over the city.

Trail 6 is a common choice for a moderate hike with good elevation, and one route over it ends at a summit of about 380 meters with a view of Taichung. A round trip on Trail 2 takes around 90 minutes. Some paths are technical, with log sections where you need balance, and wooden bridges link parts of the park.

Stairs are the main challenge on the easier trails. Trail 9-1 starts gently and then turns into a long staircase. Trail 9 is the usual alternative if you want less climbing, though parts of it have been closed at times. Trails can close after landslides, so have a second route in mind.

Forest, streams and birds

Many tree species grow along the trails, and the forest is cool and shaded, with pavilions placed between routes where you can sit. At the change from the dry season to the wet season, trees shed golden yellow leaves that cover the ground. Rosy trumpet trees bloom in their season.

Six natural creeks run through the area, including Dakeng Stream and Zhuoshuikeng Stream. More than 60 bird species have been recorded, among them the Crested Serpent Eagle and the Black Drongo. Butterflies are easy to see along the paths. The Dakeng Lovers' Bridge is a popular spot for photographs.

The market at the entrance

Stalls at the trail entrances sell drinks, snacks, fruit and vegetables, so you can buy water before you start and fresh produce on the way out. Guavas are among the local products, and tea is also sold. A livelier morning market runs near the entrance on holidays.

There are toilets at the trailhead, including a wheelchair accessible one. The trails themselves are steep, so they are not suited to wheelchair use. Weekends are busy, particularly on the easier trails, while weekdays are noticeably quieter.
