Eluanbi Lighthouse

Eluanbi Lighthouse stands on the southernmost tip of Taiwan, inside Kenting National Park in Pingtung County.

Eluanbi Lighthouse stands on the southernmost tip of Taiwan, inside Kenting National Park in Pingtung County. The tower is a symbol of the island's southern end, but the grounds are the main draw: well-kept paths, old trees, and two lookouts over the sea. A small museum covers the station's history. Go in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft and the paths are quieter.

From a national park to a southern landmark

Kenting National Park occupies the southern tip of mainland Taiwan. It became Taiwan's first national park in 1984. The park is known for its beaches, its biodiversity and the Eluanbi Lighthouse.

The lighthouse played an important role in the past as a navigation aid at the island's southern edge. Today it is best understood as a landmark that marks Taiwan's most southern lighthouse. Parts of the tower were under renovation during one visit, so check the current state before you plan around it.

The grounds and trails

The park has several short trails around the lighthouse. They are easy to walk, but some sections pass through narrow gorges and low-ceilinged passages that feel like caves. Along the way you will see natural rock formations, old living trees and birds.

The pavilions are open and airy, and they make good places to rest and look out over the water. The park has two viewing points that face the sea. Quieter stretches of rock along the coastal paths are a good choice if you want to avoid groups.

The site also has military features from its defensive past, including gun openings in the structure.

The museum and the tower

A small museum sits within the complex. Its exhibits and artefacts explain the station's history, and it adds context that the tower alone does not give. Plan to read the displays before or after your walk.

The tower is a working light. Some visitors find the building less striking than other famous lighthouses, so the walk around the grounds is usually the stronger part of the visit.

Getting there and what is nearby

Kenting has few frequent buses, which is why many visitors rely on a scooter, a car or a taxi. Buses do not reach the lighthouse directly. Get off in Hengchun, Nanwan or Kenting, then take a local bus for the last stretch.

The car park near the southernmost point has a few souvenir shops, so you can browse there before or after the walk.
