La Almoina Archaeological Museum

La Almoina Archaeological Museum sits underground beside Valencia Cathedral, on Plaça de Dècim Juni Brut.

La Almoina Archaeological Museum sits underground beside Valencia Cathedral, on Plaça de Dècim Juni Brut. Walkways lead past Roman streets, a forum and thermal baths, with remains from Visigothic and Muslim periods showing how the city changed over time. Displays, models and videos help explain the site, and information is available in Catalan, Spanish and English. Look down through glass sections at the excavated layers, then pause beneath the glass roof above the baths, where water and daylight create a shifting view of the ruins.

La Almoina is an underground archaeological site beside Valencia Cathedral. Its excavations preserve remains from several periods beneath the present-day city, including the Roman, Visigothic and Muslim eras. The museum places the ruins themselves at the centre of the visit, with walkways taking you between the different levels.

The site reveals parts of Roman Valentia, including streets, a forum and thermal baths. Later remains show how the area continued to be used in subsequent periods. The excavated structures stay in place, while the route lets you view them without walking directly over the ancient surfaces.

One of the Roman routes was the Cardo Maximus, one of the two main streets of the city. Large paving stones covered a sewer beneath it. The remains also include a well and thermal baths, along with traces of buildings and other urban spaces.

A glass roof above the baths admits daylight. Water held in the glass creates a changing effect over the ruins, connecting the view below with the surface above. Glass sections and walkways provide further sightlines into the archaeological layers.

Making sense of the ruins

The museum combines the preserved structures with explanatory displays, models and visual reconstructions. A film introduces the site, with visual material to help show how the area looked in earlier periods. A timeline sets Valencia’s history in order, while information panels are available in Catalan, Spanish and English.

Tactile miniatures and braille descriptions add another way to engage with the exhibits. The displays include comparatively few portable objects, keeping attention on the buildings and streets uncovered at the site. Guided tours are available for visitors who want more explanation as they follow the route.
