The Museum of Piracy occupies Castillo de Santa Bárbara on Guanapay peak, above Teguise in Lanzarote. The fortress was built to guard against raids, and displays cover piracy in Teguise and across the Canary Islands. The castle’s rooms are compact, but exploring its maze-like interior and looking out across the island give the visit a clear focus. Walk around the crater’s rim for broad views of Lanzarote’s volcanoes. You can also drive up for the scenery without entering the museum.

Castillo de Santa Bárbara stands on Guanapay peak above Teguise. Agustín de Herrera y Rojas had the fortress built in the mid-15th century to protect the island from raids. It is described as the oldest castle in the Canary Islands.

The fortress was rebuilt several times and served different purposes. It watched for ships approaching the coast, provided refuge for local people, and was also used as a dungeon and a military dovecote.

Piracy in the Canary Islands

Lanzarote was particularly affected by international piracy among the Canary Islands. The museum’s historical displays focus on piracy in Teguise and on attacks across the archipelago. During the 16th century, Teguise was the island’s capital and faced raids by pirates from Europe and Africa.

The rooms are compact, so the museum is a short stop. The castle itself adds context to the displays: its position above Teguise reflects its role as a lookout and place of protection.

Views from Guanapay peak

The elevated setting is a major part of a visit. From the castle, you can look across Lanzarote, and a walk around the edge of the crater opens up views of the island’s volcanoes.

You can drive up to enjoy the scenery without entering the museum. For a fuller visit, explore the castle rooms and then take time outside to walk along the crater’s edge.
