Roque Nublo is a volcanic rock formation in the mountainous centre of Gran Canaria, near Tejeda. The monolith rises above a high plateau, and a short, marked hiking trail leads from the La Goleta area to its base. The walk brings you close to the rock and opens up broad views across the island’s ravines and peaks. On a clear day, you may see Mount Teide on Tenerife. The ascent is short but steep in places, so wear proper walking shoes and allow time for the climb.

A volcanic landmark above Tejeda

Roque Nublo is a free-standing volcanic rock in the centre of Gran Canaria, within the municipality of Tejeda. It rises about 80 metres above the surrounding ground, at an elevation of 1,813 metres. The formation is one of the island’s defining natural landmarks and part of the Nublo Rural Park, a protected area designated in 1987.

The rock formed through volcanic activity millions of years ago. Erosion later shaped the surrounding terrain and exposed striking outcrops across the island’s interior. Roque Nublo’s name translates as “Cloud Rock,” a reference to the clouds that can gather around its summit. The monolith also holds spiritual significance for the island’s Indigenous people, so treat the site with care and respect.

The walk from La Goleta

The most common short route begins near Degollada de La Goleta, by the La Goleta parking area. The trail is well marked and runs for roughly 1.5 kilometres one way, though descriptions of the route and its total distance differ. Allow around 30 to 40 minutes for the uphill walk, with extra time for stops and the return journey.

Although the distance is modest, the path climbs steeply in places and can become narrow. It is manageable for many walkers, including families prepared for the slope, but it is not a flat stroll. Choose shoes with a good grip, carry water and sun protection, and consider a baby carrier instead of a pushchair when hiking with a young child. Longer walking routes also cross the surrounding highlands, but they involve substantially more distance and effort.

Views and practical planning

From the area around the rock, the view reaches across Gran Canaria’s mountainous centre, including ridges and deep ravines. Pico de las Nieves, the island’s highest point, and Roque Bentayga are among the landmarks visible from the surrounding high ground. When visibility is clear, Mount Teide on Tenerife can appear on the horizon. Cloud cover can obscure distant views, so check conditions before making the trip.

The trailhead has limited parking, and spaces can fill up. A reserved entry time slot is required for the free trail access. If you are not driving, consider arranging an excursion or checking transport options before leaving; the site is in the island’s interior. Starting early can help you avoid the busiest part of the day. Take particular care on narrow sections and give other walkers room to pass.
