Casa de la Seda

Casa de la Seda, or House of Silk, is a historic building in Barcelona’s old city, at Carrer de Sant Pere Més Alt, 1, near the Palau de la Música.

Casa de la Seda, or House of Silk, is a historic building in Barcelona’s old city, at Carrer de Sant Pere Més Alt, 1, near the Palau de la Música. It was once the headquarters of Barcelona’s shipyard guild, which helped shape the Catalan textile sector. Guided tours take you inside to see the silk-covered walls, detailed woodwork and Sala Magna. The rooms are elegant, though the visit covers only a small part of the building, so a tour is the best way to see its interiors.

A guild headquarters in the old city

Casa de la Seda was the former headquarters of Barcelona’s shipyard guild. The guild took measures that influenced the Catalan textile sector around three centuries ago. Its address, Carrer de Sant Pere Més Alt, 1, places it in the historic centre, close to the Palau de la Música.

The building received Monument of National Interest status in 1919. In 1929, it was awarded the Gold Medal of the City of Barcelona.

Seeing the interior

The elegant rooms are open to visitors on guided tours. The Sala Magna is a key stop, alongside the silk-lined walls and detailed woodwork. Because tours cover only a few rooms, choose a guided visit if you want to see inside and understand the building’s history. Some tours are dramatized.
