The Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy, at Carrer de la Mercè, 1 in Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella, is a Baroque church dedicated to the city’s patron saint, the Virgin Mary of Mercy. Its richly decorated interior holds paintings, sculptures and altars, while the exterior has an oval window above the entrance and a statue of the Virgin on the roof. Step inside to look closely at the details, or check whether a concert or other event is taking place; the basilica is also known for its acoustics.

The basilica’s exterior

Designed by Josep Mas i Dordal, the basilica was built between 1765 and 1775. An oval window accents the entrance, and an octagonal bell tower rises above the building. The rooftop statue of the Virgin Mary is visible from the shipyard.

The entrance also incorporates a Renaissance portal from the 16th-century Church of Saint Michael. It was salvaged from the older church and reused here.

Inside and the Mercedarians

Inside, chandeliers, painted ceilings and ironwork add detail to the church’s richly decorated setting. Paintings, sculptures and altars reward a closer look.

The basilica is the headquarters of the Royal, Celestial and Military Order of Our Lady of Mercy and the Redemption of the Captives, also called the Mercedarians. This Catholic order was established in 1218 by Saint Peter Nolasco to redeem Christian captives. Concerts are also held in the basilica, where the acoustics are a notable part of the experience.
