Traigh Mhòr is a wide sandy beach on the north of Barra in the Outer Hebrides, with turquoise water, open views and an unusual runway: planes land directly on the sand. When the runway is not in use, you can walk along the shore, explore sandbanks at low tide or paddle in the sea. Look out for wildlife, including golden eagles and corncrakes. A small car park and compost toilets are nearby, so bring any other supplies you need.

Traigh Mhòr

Traigh Mhòr is on Barra, in the north of the island. Its broad sandy shore also serves as the airport runway, giving the beach an unusual role in island life. Aircraft land on the sand, and the approach from Glasgow is known for its views across the Outer Hebrides.

Pay attention to the windsocks before heading onto the beach. When they are raised, the runway is active and the sand is not accessible. If you are lucky with your timing, you may see a plane arrive and leave again.

At low tide, sandbanks emerge and there is more shoreline to explore. The north of Barra has other beaches and turquoise coves, including Traigh Eais on the far side of the narrows. A beach just beyond the dunes is about a five-minute walk from the airport.

Keep an eye out for golden eagles and listen for corncrakes calling from nettle beds. Facilities at Traigh Mhòr are limited: there is a small car park and compost toilets nearby, so bring what you need for your visit.
