St Clement’s Church stands in Rodel, at the southern end of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. Built from 1520 onwards, it is one of the best-preserved medieval churches in the islands. Inside, look for the carved tombs, including the tomb of a chief of Clan MacLeod, who built the church, and read the information boards for context. The quiet setting and stonework reward a slow visit. Entry is free, and donations are welcome.

St Clement's Church : Rodel

St Clement’s Church was built from 1520 onwards by Clan MacLeod and served as the clan’s chapel. It stands at Rodel, near the southern end of Harris. Its stone construction and medieval form have survived in unusually intact condition for the Western Isles.

The church’s history is closely tied to the MacLeods. Inside is the tomb of a Clan MacLeod chief, alongside other carved tombs. The building has been restored to a form close to its original appearance and is now cared for by Historic Environment Scotland.

Tombs and carvings to look for

Give yourself time to examine the stonework inside. The tombs include finely carved details, among them a notable niche tomb dating to the 15th century. Information boards inside explain the church’s history, and information sheets are available in several languages.

On an exterior wall, look for a sheela na gig carving. Its symbolism is not settled; it is often interpreted as a pagan symbol, possibly connected with fertility. The carving is sexually explicit, so approach it as a historic object and consider its context rather than treating it as decoration.

Planning a visit

The church is free to enter, with donations appreciated. There are a few parking spaces near the building, but they can be limited. A public toilet is nearby, by the roadside cattle grid; donations are requested for its use.

Access through the gate includes a short, steep section. Check current access information before setting out, as work has taken place upstairs. The interior information boards help explain what you are seeing, so leave time to read them as well as to look around.
