Island life through the seasons

Museum & Tasglann nan Eilean is set in the grounds of Lews Castle and introduces the history and culture of the Outer Hebrides, from Barra in the south to Lewis in the north. Its displays cover life from prehistory to the present, bringing together archaeological finds, historic objects, photographs and accounts of island life.
The museum is arranged in individual rooms, with visual and audio material to explore. A wraparound film takes in different parts of the islands in different seasons, giving the visit a sense of their changing scenery and weather. Other displays address Hebridean life and language.
The Lewis Chessmen and CalMac

The Lewis Chessmen are a central part of the collection. Several original pieces are on display; some of the chessmen shown at the museum are on loan from the British Museum. The carved figures were found in 1831 in the sand dunes at Ardroil, on the west coast of Lewis.
The CalMac exhibition turns to ferry services and their place in island life. The museum also presents seasonal displays, so the subjects on view can change. After exploring the exhibits, you can continue into the wooded Lews Castle grounds, where paths include a route beside the River Creed.
