At the southwestern tip of the Kintyre Peninsula, the Mull of Kintyre is a remote headland known for its coastal views and lighthouse. On a clear day, you can see across the Atlantic towards Northern Ireland, including Rathlin Island. The route down to the lighthouse passes quiet beaches and open scenery, with walking as part of the visit. Paul McCartney’s song helped make the place famous, but its appeal here is the chance to spend time by the sea, away from busy roads and towns.

The headland and lighthouse

Mull of Kintyre

The Mull of Kintyre is the southwestern end of the Kintyre Peninsula, a remote stretch of Scotland’s coast. The lighthouse stands at the tip of the headland. From there, clear weather can open up views across the Atlantic towards the Antrim coast of Northern Ireland and Rathlin Island.

The lighthouse is reached on foot. The walk down is part of the experience, with the sea and sandy bays visible along the way. Quiet beaches and a sense of distance from nearby towns are among the reasons to make the trip.

The drive follows a narrow, steep single-track road that climbs from sea level to about 330 metres. Take your time on the route and be ready for a winding drive above the coast. Walking is recommended in the area, but the descent to the lighthouse calls for a reasonable level of fitness.

Weather shapes the visit. A clear day gives you the best chance of seeing across to Northern Ireland; in heavy mist, visibility can be very limited. There is no mobile phone signal in this remote location, so plan for the journey before setting out. The headland is also associated with Paul McCartney’s song “Mull of Kintyre,” written while he lived on the peninsula.
