Mellerstain House is an 18th-century family home in Gordon, in the Scottish Borders, with architecture by William and Robert Adam. Its rooms are known for their design and decoration, especially the library, and guided tours introduce the house’s history and former occupants. Outside, terraced gardens, a lake and woodland paths make time for a walk part of the visit. The house opens to the public on selected dates, so check ahead before travelling. A courtyard café is on site.
A house shaped by two generations of Adams

Mellerstain’s design began with William Adam around 1725. Work stopped after the outer wings were built, and the central block connecting them was completed by his son Robert about 40 years later. The result is a Borders mansion shaped by the work of both architects.
The house remains the family home of the Earls of Haddington. Its rooms contain historic furniture and paintings, alongside decorative ceilings and carefully designed interiors. The library is a particular point of interest for its Robert Adam design and decoration.
Inside the house

A guided tour is a useful way to learn about the building and the people who lived there. Local guides lead visitors through the house and can answer questions about its history and former occupants. The rooms are furnished, and seating is available during the tour.
The house is not open every day, so check the dates before planning a visit. The grounds and house may have different access arrangements; confirm what is open for your chosen date.
Gardens, lake and woodland paths
The grounds combine terraced gardens with a lake and woodland walks. The gardens are especially rewarding in fine weather, while paths around the lake and through the trees give visitors room to linger beyond the house tour.
A courtyard café is on site, with toilets also available. Some visitors have used the grounds for walks when the house was closed, but check current access arrangements before travelling specifically to walk there.
