Luskentyre Beach lies on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, where a broad sweep of white sand meets clear turquoise water. Walk beside the sea, look across to the hills, or take in the contrast of sand, water and sky with a camera. The beach is spacious, and the water is cold, so it is better suited to a coastal walk than a swim if you are sensitive to low temperatures. Bring layers: conditions can change quickly, and the car park is small.

Finding the beach

Luskentyre Beach

Luskentyre is on the Isle of Harris. To reach it, follow the A858 south from Tarbert for about 7 miles (12 km), then turn right at the Losgaintir turn-off and continue to the end of the road.

The approach road is single track, with passing places. The beach car park is small and can fill up. If there is no space, the area around Seilebost Beach further around the bay may be quieter.

Views from the northern shore

The northern half of Luskentyre is called Tràigh Rosamol. From here, look out towards Taransay and the mountains of North Harris. The beach’s open sweep of sand and the changing colours of the sea make the shoreline a rewarding place to explore on foot.

Access across the sand is uneven and unpaved. This can be difficult for people with walking difficulties, and a wheelchair user may need substantial assistance to reach the beach.
