Huntly Castle is an extensive stone ruin on the edge of Huntly in Aberdeenshire, with ornate carvings and rooms that range from cellars and a prison to a great hall, kitchen and bedrooms. The site was a stronghold and residence of the Gordon family, and its buildings changed over several centuries. Look for the bakery and brew house in an outbuilding, then climb the tower if access allows for views over the surrounding area. Interpretive panels and a question sheet help bring the remains to life.

A stronghold and residence of the Gordons

Huntly Castle
Huntly Castle

Huntly Castle stands just outside the town of Huntly, where the rivers Bogie and Deveron meet. It was the main seat of the Gordon family and served both as a stronghold and as a baronial residence. The site changed substantially over time: four castles stood here across roughly 600 years, and the remains record those successive phases.

The castle was attacked at least eight times. Its stonework still bears marks of that turbulent history, alongside the decorative carvings that made the residence notable. The settlement and surrounding lands were known as Milton of Strathbogie until the Earl of Huntly received a charter to rename them in the early 16th century. Huntly later became the name of the town beside the River Bogie.

The ruins are large enough to explore as a series of distinct spaces. Inside the main castle, look for the cellars, prison, great hall, kitchen and bedrooms. Interpretive panels around the site explain the remains and their history. Ornate stone carvings, heraldic sculptures and stone friezes are among the details to seek out as you move through the buildings.

An outbuilding contains the remains of a bakery and brew house. Outside, a section of the original medieval road survives near the castle. The combination of domestic rooms, working spaces and defensive areas gives the visit a clear sense of how the complex was used.

Planning a visit

Allow about an hour to walk through the ruins and read the information panels. A question sheet from the office adds a simple way to look for details you might otherwise miss. Tower access can be restricted, and the stairs may be difficult for some visitors; check current access information if reaching the top is important to your visit.

The site has a shop, and parking is available near the entrance. Parking may be free nearby in the off-season. The surrounding grounds include uneven, pebbled areas, steps and different levels, so access within the castle is limited for visitors who cannot manage stairs. A park with a play area and picnic space is close to the river.
