Cruachan Power Station Visitor Centre is beside Ben Cruachan Dam in Dalmally, Argyll and Bute, with views over Loch Awe. Displays explain how the pumped-storage hydroelectric station works and give information for the walk up to the dam and upper reservoir. The guided tour into the mountain and power station is suspended during the upgrade, with reopening reported for 2028. Before or after your visit, stop at the Dam Cafe for coffee, hot or cold drinks, and homemade baking such as fruit scones.

Ben Cruachan Dam supplies water to a pumped-storage hydroelectric power station built inside the mountainside. The project was developed to use the region’s hydroelectric potential. Construction began in 1959 and took six years. Workers excavated 36 miles of tunnels and created a reservoir about 1,300 feet above the power station.

The visitor centre’s displays explain the dam and the station’s role in generating electricity. The guided tour normally takes visitors through tunnels into the mountain, but tours are suspended during the power station upgrade. The material provided here gives 2028 as the expected reopening year.

Walking up to the dam

The centre provides information about the route to the dam and advice for the ascent. The walk from Falls of Cruachan railway station involves a steep climb, so ask about the route before you leave. One account describes taking the service road back down and reaching the main road a long way from the visitor centre. Plan your return as carefully as the walk up.

At the dam and upper reservoir, you can look across Loch Awe and the surrounding hills. The area is also a place to watch for sheep nearby. The walk and views depend on going beyond the visitor centre, so allow time and be ready for the climb.

Cafe and visitor facilities

The Dam Cafe serves coffee and hot and cold drinks, alongside homemade baking. Fruit scones are among the items noted at the counter. The centre also has a gift shop, toilets and water bottle refills. Parking is available, and Falls of Cruachan station is a short walk away.

If you are planning to drive, check access arrangements before leaving your car: one account reports the car park being locked at 3:45 pm. The centre’s opening information is shown separately on this page, so check it before setting out.
