On University Embankment on Vasilyevsky Island, the Menshikov Palace is one of St Petersburg’s earliest stone buildings and part of the Hermitage Museum. Built for Alexander Menshikov, the city’s first governor, it presents the interiors and material life of Russia in the early 18th century. Restored rooms, decorative details and objects from the Hermitage collection give the visit its focus. Read the bilingual room plaques or use an audioguide to follow the palace’s history at your own pace; there is also a cafe in the garden for a break.

The Menshikov Palace stands on University Embankment on Vasilyevsky Island. Built between 1710 and 1727, it was commissioned by Alexander Menshikov, St Petersburg’s first governor-general and a close associate of Peter the Great. It was among the city’s first major stone buildings and served as Menshikov’s residence and an administrative centre.

Menshikov’s fortunes changed before the palace was finished. Overthrown in 1727, he was exiled to Siberia. The building later became the First Cadet Corps, a military academy, and was eventually used as a museum of the Corps. Today it is a branch of the Hermitage Museum.

Rooms and collections

The palace’s displays recreate the decorative interiors of Peter the Great’s time with works of fine, decorative and applied art from the Hermitage collection. Restored rooms and their furnishings are central to the visit, with details that include intricate floor designs. The rooms offer a sense of the lavish surroundings created for one of the most powerful figures in early St Petersburg.

Menshikov was also an art collector, and the palace’s changing roles have added layers to its history. Its displays connect the building’s domestic interiors with its later use as a school for Russian statesmen and military leaders.

Getting context as you explore

You can follow the palace’s history with an audioguide or a guided tour. Information plaques in English and Russian explain the rooms, so you can also visit independently and pause where a detail catches your attention. Museum staff can answer questions about the building, its objects and restoration.

Plan a pause at the cafe in the garden if you want a rest during your visit. The palace is part of the Hermitage, but its focus on an early 18th-century residence gives it a different emphasis from the museum’s larger collections.
