A change of style inside

Smol'nyy Cathedral

The cathedral’s exterior is blue and white, with Baroque detailing. Inside, the decoration is more restrained: white walls are accented with gold images of saints. The contrast between the ornate outside and the simpler interior is a defining part of the visit.

Take time to look at the building’s details from different angles while walking around the grounds. The quiet setting also gives you room to photograph the cathedral without focusing only on its façade.

The bell tower climb

A bell tower observation point can be reached by climbing about 280 steps. The ascent takes effort, but the view looks out over St Petersburg. Access to the top costs extra, and visits are scheduled, so check arrangements before planning your climb.

Dress respectfully for the cathedral. Long trousers are advised, and women are asked to cover their heads.
