Rumyantsev Mansion is a museum on English Embankment in St Petersburg, about a 10-minute walk from the Hermitage. Its exhibitions cover Leningrad’s history, with particular attention to the Siege. Rooms recreated with survivors’ involvement contain original objects from that period, alongside displays on communal apartments. The mansion’s interiors are also part of the visit. An excursion can add context to the exhibits, especially the deeply affecting wartime rooms; check in advance whether a tour is available in English.

Exhibitions on the Siege of Leningrad

The rooms devoted to the Siege include objects from the period and displays recreated with the involvement of people who lived through it. The exhibition traces the effects of the blockade and the endurance of the city’s residents. Some material is distressing, particularly the evidence of starvation, so take your time through these rooms.

The later displays also tell a story of survival. They cover the Road of Life across Lake Ladoga, which opened a route through the blockade. Excerpts from Tanya Savicheva’s diary are among the material held at the museum.

Communal apartments and guided visits

A separate exhibition recreates a communal apartment, connecting the museum visit with everyday life in Leningrad. Other displays can run at the same time, including exhibitions on the city’s early history. The selection changes, so check what is showing when you plan your visit.

A guide can explain details that are harder to get from exhibition text alone. Much of the information may be in Russian, and English tours are not confirmed, so ask about language availability in advance. Museum staff can also help visitors find their way around the exhibitions.
