On the south side of Palace Square, opposite the Winter Palace, the General Staff Building combines a sweeping Neoclassical façade with galleries belonging to the Hermitage. Carlo Rossi designed the building, whose two wings meet at a monumental triumphal arch. Inside, the collection includes paintings by Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse and other artists, with a strong focus on French Impressionism and art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The spacious galleries and quieter pace make it easier to spend time with the works.

A landmark on Palace Square

General Staff Building

The General Staff Building curves along the south side of Palace Square, facing the Winter Palace. Its long Neoclassical façade gives the square its distinctive shape. Carlo Rossi designed the complex, built between 1819 and 1829, as two wings joined by a monumental arch.

The arch commemorates Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s invading army in 1812. Look up to see the sculptures and chariot crowning it. The building’s exterior is a reason to pause on the square before heading inside.

The building houses galleries of the State Hermitage Museum. Its collections include French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works, as well as paintings by artists such as Monet, Degas, Gauguin, Matisse, Van Gogh and Picasso. Exhibitions span art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, alongside other displays.

The galleries occupy multiple floors, and the museum is large enough to take several hours to explore at a relaxed pace. Spacious rooms give you room to look closely at the paintings. Benches provide places to rest, and information signs are available in multiple languages.

Planning a visit

The General Staff Building is on Palace Square, across from the Winter Palace. Its entrance is on the left side when facing away from the Winter Palace. The building is part of the Hermitage museum complex, but ticket arrangements can differ by visit, so check the current ticket details before you go.

The galleries can be quieter than those in the Winter Palace, particularly outside peak periods. Booking ahead is recommended. If you want to see several exhibitions, leave enough time rather than trying to rush through the floors.
