Chesme Church

Chesme Church, also called the Church of the Birth of St.

Chesme Church, also called the Church of the Birth of St. John the Baptist, is a small Russian Orthodox church on Ulitsa Lensoveta in southern St Petersburg. Catherine the Great consecrated it in 1780. Its pink-and-white exterior, pointed turrets and Gothic details make it an unusual stop among the city’s churches; inside, the atmosphere is quiet and reverent. Walk around the building, then visit the small cemetery behind it. The surrounding residential district gives the church a different setting from central St Petersburg.

The chapel is smaller than it can appear from outside. The interior is quiet and reverent, so keep your visit calm and respectful. The original interiors are no longer present, and the exterior is the main architectural draw.

A small cemetery lies behind the church. It is associated with heroes of the Siege of Leningrad and adds another point of interest to a visit.

Getting to Chesme Church

The church stands on Ulitsa Lensoveta, off Moscow Avenue. Moskovski and Park Pobedy metro stations on the blue line are suggested for reaching the area. The walk takes you through a southern neighbourhood of residential apartments, with a university building opposite the church.
