The Moscow Kremlin is a fortified historic complex beside Red Square in central Moscow, with palaces, churches, museums and government buildings within its walls. It has been a seat of Russian power for centuries, and its Cathedral Square brings together old churches with painted interiors and notable burials. The Armoury displays royal regalia, ceremonial clothing, arms and other treasures. You can also see the enormous Tsar Cannon and visit the eternal flame, which honours soldiers who died in the Second World War.

A fortress at the centre of Moscow

The Kremlin occupies Borovitsky Hill beside the Moskva River, at the historic centre of Moscow. Its name means a fortress within a city. The complex is enclosed by walls and towers, and includes palaces, churches, squares, museums and buildings used by the government. Parts of the site are open to visitors; government and administrative buildings are not.

The Kremlin has served as a centre of Russian power across different periods, from the tsars through the Soviet era to the present. Its buildings and collections bring together political history, religious art and royal objects in one walkable area. The Kremlin and Red Square were recognised together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.

Cathedral Square and its churches

Cathedral Square is the historic religious centre of the Kremlin. Its churches are known for painted interiors, including icons and wall art. The Archangel Cathedral contains the tombs of Russian rulers, among them Ivan the Terrible. Take time to look inside the churches as well as at their exteriors; the painted decoration is a central part of the visit.

The Ivan the Great Bell Tower is another landmark in the complex. The Kremlin grounds also contain historic palaces and monuments, including a large cannon. The buildings reflect different chapters of the site’s history, so a visit is more than a walk along the walls.

The Armoury and other collections

The Armoury is one of the Kremlin’s principal museums. Its displays include royal regalia, ceremonial dress, arms, gold and silver objects, and works by Russian, European and Eastern makers. The collection also includes Fabergé eggs, jewel-set thrones and richly decorated carriages. These objects offer a close look at the ceremonial life and material wealth of Russia’s rulers.

The complex also has an eternal flame dedicated to soldiers who died in the Second World War. Plan your route around the churches, museums and outdoor monuments you most want to see, and check ticket arrangements before setting out. Tickets bought online around two weeks in advance can help you avoid long queues; bring your passport for entry.
