Ostankino Television Tower is a 540-metre broadcasting landmark in Moscow’s Ostankino district, at Akademika Koroleva Street 15. Built in 1967, it has observation decks with wide views over the city, including a glass-floor section for looking down from above. Inside, you can also explore interactive exhibits or stop at a cafe or restaurant. The covered and open-air viewpoints give you different ways to take in the skyline. For a memorable visit, plan around sunset and allow time for the security checks and the different levels.

Ostankino Television Tower

Ostankino Television Tower was completed in 1967 to mark the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution. At 540 metres tall, it became a major landmark in northern Moscow. It was designed by Nikolai Nikitin and built for television and radio broadcasting, a role it still serves alongside its visitor facilities.

The tower’s shape was conceived as an inverted lily, with a central stem and broad supports at the base. Its foundation was designed to be heavier than the structure above it, a choice intended to give the tall tower stability. The building’s engineering and its public observation areas share the same vertical structure, but the broadcasting equipment remains central to its purpose.

The visitor route includes a covered observation deck at 337 metres and an open-air deck at 340 metres. From this height, the view takes in parts of Moscow including VDNKh, the Botanical Gardens and the Moscow City skyscrapers. The glass floor gives a direct view down from the tower, an option for visitors comfortable with heights.

The tower’s elevated position makes the city appear at a different scale, with landmarks and neighbourhoods spread across the view. Clear conditions and sunset can add to the experience, though the view depends on what is visible from the decks on the day.

Exhibits, dining and the entry process

Interactive exhibits add context to a visit beyond the skyline. The tower also has cafes and restaurants, including the Seventh Heaven restaurant complex, whose dining floor rotates to give changing views of Moscow. You can make the visit focused on the observation decks or set aside extra time for food and the exhibits.

Entry includes strict security checks, and a passport is required. Keep your belongings to a minimum to make the screening process easier. Advance ticket booking is recommended because the number of visitors admitted at a time is limited.
