The Museum of Cosmonautics is at Prospekt Mira, 111, within the base of the Monument to the Conquerors of Space near VDNKh. The monument was erected in 1964, before the museum opened in 1981. Its opening marked 20 years since Yuri Gagarin’s first spaceflight.

The collection began with photographs, films, documents and space technology, alongside objects connected with designers and cosmonauts. It now tells the story of Soviet and Russian space exploration through equipment, personal items and displays about the people behind the missions.

The exhibits include spacecraft that returned from orbit with visible damage from re-entry, as well as cosmonaut clothing, personal belongings and technical instruments. You can see life-sized satellites and lunar rovers, and examine a model of the Mir space station. The displays also cover the practical demands of living and working in space.

Among the objects connected with early missions are an ejection container used to bring the space dogs Belka and Strelka back to Earth in 1960. Their journey is part of the museum’s account of the experiments and milestones that preceded human spaceflight. Other exhibits include spacecraft models and equipment from the space race.

Stories and interactive exhibits

The museum follows space exploration through the Soviet period and into modern times, with material on Yuri Gagarin and later cosmonauts. Interactive displays bring the Cold War competition into view alongside the hardware and personal objects. The collection also includes archival footage and documents.

The building itself is part of the setting: the museum sits below the monument’s rising structure. Displays are arranged across exhibition halls, and some include English translations. An audio guide can add context as you move through the exhibits; leave time for it if you want to connect individual objects with the missions and people they represent.
