A museum for modern and contemporary art

The Moscow Museum of Modern Art opened in 1999 and was the first state museum in Russia devoted to art of the 20th and 21st centuries. Its collection began with works from founder Zurab Tsereteli’s private collection. The museum’s focus brings together Russian avant-garde art and works by artists from Europe, the Americas and elsewhere.

The collection includes paintings, sculpture and graphic works. Among the international artists represented are Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró and Rufino Tamayo. Russian artists include Kazimir Malevich, Natalia Goncharova, Alexandra Exter and David Burliuk. The range gives visitors a way to look at Russian art in conversation with movements beyond Russia.

Look closely at the works and installations

Russian avant-garde art has a prominent place in the collection. Works by Malevich, Goncharova and other artists from the movement sit alongside art from later periods. You may also encounter sculpture and installations that use contemporary technologies, so the galleries can feel quite different from a museum devoted mainly to traditional painting.

Specific displays depend on the exhibition programme. Past collection highlights have included Armand’s objects and sculpture, Arnaldo Pomodoro’s “Sun Disk” and Yukinori Yanagi’s “CIS Ant Farm.” These works are not a guarantee of what will be on view during your visit. Check the current exhibitions before you go, particularly if you are hoping to see a particular artist or type of work.

Plan your visit around the exhibitions

The museum’s exhibitions change, and the experience depends in part on what is showing. Give the current programme a look before choosing a day. If you want more context for the artworks, guided tours are available in English and Russian. Descriptions in the galleries are clear and concise, which can help you follow the displays at your own pace.

The museum is at Petrovka Ulitsa, 25, in central Moscow. Admission is paid, and advance ticket booking is recommended. The venue has a wheelchair-accessible entrance and restrooms. Allow about an hour for a visit, then adjust that time to suit the exhibitions you want to see.
