Moscow Cathedral Mosque

The original mosque was built in 1904 by Moscow’s Tatar community. The building was demolished in 2011, and a new mosque took its place. It reopened in 2015 as the city’s main mosque.

The mosque stands near the Olympic Stadium in central Moscow. Its minarets reach 72 metres, and its central dome rises 46 metres. The dome and minarets are decorated with gold leaf.

Inside the prayer halls

The interior includes spacious prayer halls with marble, carpets and chandeliers. Geometric patterns and Arabic calligraphy decorate the walls and domes. The building’s design draws on Byzantine architecture, with a colourful exterior and prominent domes.

The mosque is an active religious site, so treat the prayer spaces with care. Men and women use separate areas, and some sections are reserved for men. Follow the signs as you move through the building.

Entry and visitor facilities

Visitors enter through a security checkpoint and metal detector. A dressing room on the ground floor provides free covering garments for people who need them. Shoes are left in the dressing room, and an elevator connects the floors.

The mosque grounds also have shops selling religious literature, souvenirs and dates. The Museum of Islam is inside the complex and adds context to a visit beyond the architecture.

Visiting during Ramadan

Ramadan is a particularly meaningful time to visit, when the mosque is part of the city’s Muslim community life. The grounds can become busy around Friday prayers, so plan your visit with the mosque’s role as a place of worship in mind. Dress appropriately and respect the separate prayer areas.
