Gaia Cable Car’s Cais de Gaia station sits on the Vila Nova de Gaia riverfront, beside the port wine cellars. The gondola climbs to Jardim do Morro, near the upper level of the Dom Luís I Bridge and Serra do Pilar Monastery. The ride takes about five minutes and gives you a view of the Douro, Porto’s historic centre, the bridge and the wine cellars from above. It is a practical way to avoid the steep uphill walk, as well as a short scenic trip across the hillside.

The route from Cais de Gaia

The lower station is on Avenida de Ramos Pinto, beside the Douro waterfront and Gaia’s port wine cellars. From here, the cable car climbs the hillside to Jardim do Morro, near the upper level of the Dom Luís I Bridge and Serra do Pilar Monastery.

The journey covers about 600 metres and takes around five minutes. Glass-sided cabins give you views over the river, the rooftops of the wine cellars and Porto across the water. The ride is short, so think of it as a quick connection between the lower and upper parts of Gaia as well as a chance to see the riverfront from a different angle.

The cable car is most useful if you want to avoid the steep walk uphill from Cais de Gaia. You can ride up to Jardim do Morro, then continue to the bridge or Serra do Pilar Monastery. At the river level, the station is close to the port cellars and waterfront promenade.

Buy a ticket online or at the station’s vending machines. If you only need help getting uphill, consider taking a one-way ride. Return trips from the lower station can take longer when the late-afternoon queue builds. Sunny weather gives you better conditions for taking photos; the upper area is also a place to watch the sunset over the river and city.
