A Jesuit church in Funchal

Igreja de São João Evangelista is also known as Igreja do Colégio, or the College Church. The Jesuits built it in the 17th century. Construction began in 1624 and was completed in 1640. Its exterior is restrained, with three portals on the façade; inside, the decoration is far more elaborate.

The church stands on Praça do Município in Funchal’s historic centre. The square’s black-and-white pavement forms a wave pattern, a style associated with Madeira. Take a moment to look at it before or after visiting the church.

Carved wood, tiles and painted ceilings

The interior brings together gilded woodcarving and colourful ceramic tiles. Look around the chapels for carved, gilded details and azulejo panels, then look up to see the painted ceiling, including the barrel-vaulted section. Frescoes and paintings that resemble tilework add further colour to the church.

The ornament continues across the walls, columns and altar. The combination of painted surfaces, ceramic panels and carved wood makes it worth moving through the space slowly rather than focusing on a single altar or chapel. Chapel information includes English translations and dedicates each chapel to a saint.

The tower and first-floor halls

A small tower can be visited for a view over Funchal and Praça do Município. Access costs €1. The church also has ornate halls on the first floor in its left wing, which are open to visitors.

The main entrance has steps. A ramped entrance is available at the side, to the right of the main entrance, for wheelchair access.
