Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte is an 18th-century church in Monte, above Funchal.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte is an 18th-century church in Monte, above Funchal. It is a place of pilgrimage dedicated to Our Lady of Monte, the island’s patron saint, and holds the tomb of Charles I of Austria, who lived in exile in Madeira. Inside, look for the ornate pulpit, painted ceiling and choir loft; an upper level gives views towards Funchal Marina. Paths wind through gardens around the church, with old trees and a tea house nearby.

A church with a long pilgrimage history

The church stands on a site associated with an earlier chapel and hermitage. The current building dates to the 18th century, though accounts differ on the details of its construction and rebuilding. The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Monte, regarded as Madeira’s patron saint, and remains an important place of pilgrimage.

A major celebration takes place in August in Our Lady of Monte’s honour. Pilgrims come to the church for the festivities, so the area has a different feel during this period than on a quieter visit. The church’s religious role is still central to its identity; it is not simply a viewpoint above Funchal.

Inside the church

The interior holds the tomb of Charles I of Austria, the last emperor of Austria, who spent his final years in exile in Madeira. His tomb gives the church a connection to the island’s later history as well as its religious life.

Look from the nave towards the choir loft and its Corinthian-style columns, then notice the wooden box seats along the side walls and the ornate pulpit. The ceiling has a painted, curved design. From the choir loft, you can also see the pipe organ and details used in church services. If you go up to an upper level, the view reaches across Funchal Marina.

Paths and gardens around Monte

The church is surrounded by garden paths and a mix of plants and trees, including large old trees. You can walk around the church grounds and continue along the paths at your own pace. A tea house is located up the hilly street on the right side of the church.

The church sits above the hillside toboggan rides, and a platform near the top of the steps looks down towards the starting area. Monte Palace gardens are nearby, so the church can be part of a longer visit to Monte. Reaching the church involves a climb, but the road on its right and the gradually rising path through the gardens on its left provide alternatives to the steeper steps.
