East of Kraków’s Old Town, the Botanical Garden of the Jagiellonian University brings together outdoor beds, an arboretum, ponds and greenhouses. The garden dates to the 18th century and is a quiet place to spend a few hours among plants from different climates. Look for the tropical collections, cacti and orchids, and the historic Canary Island date palm beneath its protective structure. Benches and shaded paths make it easy to pause between sections; the garden museum adds another stop to the visit.

A university garden with a long history

Botany was taught at the Jagiellonian University for medical purposes from the late 16th century, before the university had a garden for research. The garden was established in 1783 on land that had belonged to the Czartoryski family and was acquired by the Jesuits in 1752. Its early grounds covered a smaller area and were used to grow ornamental flowers and medicinal plants. The garden later expanded, and it remains part of the university.

Today, the grounds sit east of Kraków’s Old Town, at 27 Kopernika Street. The outdoor paths lead through plant collections, themed displays and an arboretum. The garden’s varied sections give you a reason to take your time rather than follow a single route straight through.

Greenhouses, the museum and a historic palm

The greenhouses shelter plants that need different growing conditions, including tropical species, cacti and orchids. They are a useful contrast to the open-air collections, particularly when the weather makes a longer garden walk less appealing. One notable plant is a Canary Island date palm about 150 years old, protected beneath a structure built for it. The garden also has ponds, including a small pond with a wooden bridge nearby.

The Botanical Garden Museum is within the grounds. Its displays include an archaeological collection of plants, with material on plant diversity and their significance. The museum’s schedule can differ from the garden’s, so check its hours before setting aside time for it. Some plant labels are in Polish, which can limit how much information is available in English as you explore.

Planning a walk through the grounds

Paths connect the outdoor displays, greenhouses and quieter corners of the garden. Benches and shaded spots let you stop along the way, and the pond offers a change of pace from the plant collections. The grounds are suitable for a relaxed visit with children, as well as for visitors who want to sit and take a break from the city.

A full walk can take several hours if you explore most of the areas. If you have less time, focus on the greenhouses and the outdoor sections that interest you most. Visitors who want more context about the plants can look into a guided tour; educational tours are available, but they need to be booked in advance. The garden’s website has current visitor information.
