Mercado

Nizwa Central Souq

Nizwa Souq is a traditional market in Nizwa, in Oman's Ad Dakhiliyah region.

Nizwa Souq is a traditional market in Nizwa, in Oman's Ad Dakhiliyah region. It occupies several buildings behind a stretch of the old city wall, with sections for fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, dates and handicrafts. Near the fort, stalls sell khanjars, silver jewellery, textiles and spices. Sellers are often calm and welcoming, so you can browse at your own pace. Allow a few hours, and plan your visit around the Friday livestock market if you can.

Behind the old city wall

Nizwa Souq is among the oldest markets of its kind in Oman. It spreads across separate blocks behind a crenellated stretch of the city wall, which overlooks a wadi.

The blocks are divided by trade. Fruit and vegetables, meat and fish each have their own area, and the fish market sits at the southern end of the souq. The part nearest the fort is given over to handicrafts and is geared to visitors.

Some sections keep their ancient architecture and structures that have not been renovated, so the older lanes give a clear sense of the market's age.

Khanjars, the curved daggers of Omani tradition, are among the most sought-after items. Silver jewellery is also a major draw, and the silver khanjar is known for its high quality.

Other goods include pottery, lamps, textiles, copper, spices, frankincense, woven baskets and taqiya caps. Fresh dates are sold in the Date souq, and the market is known for halwa and honey.

The East Souq is recommended for handicrafts, spices and herbal remedies.

The Friday livestock market

The livestock market takes place on Friday mornings, when the souq fills with farmers, herders and animals from across the region. Animals are auctioned, and you can watch the sellers walk their goats along a path while buyers and visitors stand at the side.

Camels, sheep and goats are shown around the fort on Fridays, which makes the day a good one to combine both sites.
